How to live carefree in Rio de Janeiro (Important recommendations)
Traveling in Rio:
Taking into account the fame Rio has for being a violent city, the idiosyncrasies of the residents of Rio de Janiero and the latest petty crime statistics indicate that robberies are going down thanks to the pacification of the favelas (suppression of drug trafficking ). the staff of El Misti House has a couple simple recommendations to give you.
Money:
Never carry a lot of cash. You will not need more than 200 Reals in a day or night. (unless of course, you're going shopping)
Documents:
It's preferable to carry a photocopy of your passport and/or identification when you're out and about. It's a cheap alternative that can save you a lot of hassle. Never go out with the original.
Cameras:
Its always better to carry them in a backpack, a bag or basically anywhere out of the sight of anyone who might be interested. When going to Lapa, Carnival or any big street party it's better to leave cameras safe in the hostel and enjoy the party worry-free.
Sometimes it happens:
Some tourists are robbed because they aren't careful, ignorant or simply because they're tourists. Unfortunately this happens in any big city in Latin America and also in Rio. But with a little common sense it's pretty simple to avoid any situation that might not let you enjoy your stay in Rio to the fullest.
Etc:
Sometimes it's preferable to spend a little more money to do something with a guide or take a taxi rather than a bus and be safer. The people of Rio love to help tourists but they also often tend to charge inflated prices when they realize someone is a foreigner, so be attentive. Always ask us how much a taxi or anything else should cost and we'll be happy to tell you without any commitment.
One suggestion:
“Quanto custa?” (“How much does this cost?”).If you don't understand Portuguese, just signal at the object you're interested in and hand them a pen and paper... they'll get the message.
